If you are trying to help someone who is struggling with health and fitness, the best thing you can do is not to simply provide them with the perfect diet plan or give them the ideal workout program, even if it's personalized. While accurate information is essential, it falls short when it comes to driving real change.
Our world is filled with knowledge, more so now than ever before, but what it often lacks is wisdom and compassion. The most effective approach, whether you're a trainer, friend, or loved one, is to meet them where they are. Walk alongside them, recognizing that the journey ahead may be riddled with unexpected detours, breakdowns, and uphill climbs. Work collaboratively to identify the next best step for them, regardless of how many times you need to reset or explore different approaches.
This will demand a lot from you. You'll need to genuinely care about the individual you're assisting, to share in their joy and sadness during both their successes and failures. Patience and understanding will be essential. You'll find yourself balancing between pushing them harder and prioritizing rest and recovery. You'll also have to navigate the mental minefield they may be dealing with – years of ingrained bad habits, negative reinforcement patterns, and using food/exercise as coping mechanisms.
This philosophy of guidance, connection, support and direction is what sets PHF apart.
Ted Lasso said it best. "It's not about me, it never was."
INVICTUS
"Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul."
